Make your pages readable by AI search engines
Google says a page needs nothing beyond normal indexing to appear in its AI features, and no special schema. Most other AI crawlers do not run JavaScript, so the answer must be in the HTML. Being readable makes a page eligible, not chosen: Ahrefs found 76.10% of pages cited in AI Overviews rank in the top 10. AI chatbots sent 0.28% of web traffic in March 2026, per Ahrefs.

When does it fit?
- Your pages are indexed and can show a snippet in Google: that is the whole requirement for Google's AI features.[1]
- Your pages already rank for related queries: Ahrefs found that 76.10% of pages cited in AI Overviews rank in the top 10.[9]
- Your product is already discussed on forums and other people's blogs: Tally's co-founder credits that material for ChatGPT becoming its top referral source.[15]
When should you skip it?
How do you run it?
Check that Google indexes the pages
Google's AI features use ordinary indexing: a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet. Nothing else is required.
Fetch each page without JavaScript
Load the raw HTML as a crawler would. Most AI crawlers other than Google's do not run JavaScript, so the answer must be in the server response.
Allow the search crawlers
Allow OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot in robots.txt and in any CDN or firewall bot rules, including their published IP ranges.
Answer with specifics
Put the direct answer near the top, with numbers, quotations and sources where you have them.
Keep a normal structure
Clear headings and sections help readers. There is no need to cut pages into small blocks or add special markup.
One page per topic
Do not write a page or section for every phrasing of a question; Google treats that as scaled content abuse when it aims to sway AI answers.
Get discussed elsewhere
Assistants draw on forums, reviews and other blogs. Help in the communities your buyers read.
Measure with a question
Read referral sessions from AI assistants, and add a "How did you hear about us?" question at signup.
What usually happens?
- Few clicks from inside Google AI summaries: in a Pew Research Center study, users clicked a link in the summary in 1% of visits that showed one.[14]
- Specifics help once a page is retrieved: in the GEO study on arXiv, adding citations, quotations and statistics to pages taken from the top 5 search results raised one visibility measure by 30 to 40%, in a lab benchmark.[13]
- Content quality outweighs tactics, in Google's own words: content people find unique and useful will likely matter more over time than any of its other suggestions.[2]
Who has done it, and what happened?
Each case is one team's own report: what happened to them, not a typical result.
Marie Martens, co-founder of Tally, a form builder2025, Positive result
Grew through word of mouth and organic search for years; the post describes no specific AI search program.
Marie Martens reports that ChatGPT became Tally's top referral source, with over 2,000 tracked signups via AI tools in recent months.[15]
An established, widely discussed product rather than an early-stage site, and the attribution is the founder's reading, not a test.
Ahrefs, an SEO software company, on its own analytics2026, Mixed result
Measured signups by traffic source.
Ahrefs reports that AI search visitors were 0.5% of its visitors but drove 12.1% of its signups.[10]
A well-known brand that assistants already name, from a vendor that sells AI visibility tracking, with no attribution method given.
What does the evidence say against it?
- Schema did not move citations: Ahrefs tracked 1,885 pages that added JSON-LD against 4,000 matched controls and found no major uplift on any platform.[8]
- Assistants ignored JSON-LD in a direct test: searchVIU, which sells SEO tools, found they read only the visible HTML.[11]
- Restructuring may not get a page cited at all: a preprint on arXiv, not yet peer reviewed, found that structured rendering concentrates credit among cited sources, with an inconclusive effect on whether a page is cited.[12]
How do you read the result?
- What to count
- Referral sessions and signups from AI assistants, and answers to a "how did you hear about us" question
- When to read it
- Monthly, starting a month after the changes
- How to decide
- Keep the technical checks whatever the numbers say, since they cost little. Judge content changes on repeated checks, never one answer: in a preprint on arXiv, 15 percent of cite-or-not decisions changed when the same inputs were run again.[12]
What goes wrong?
- Rendering the answer only in the browser: Vercel, which sells server rendering, found that none of the major AI crawlers it measured run JavaScript, apart from Google's, and Google notes that not all bots can.[4][7]
- Blocking the search crawlers in robots.txt or firewall rules: OpenAI says sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot are not shown in ChatGPT search answers, and Perplexity asks sites to allow its crawler and IP ranges.[5][6]
- A page for every phrasing of a question: Google says doing it to manipulate AI responses violates its scaled content abuse policy.[2]
- Cutting pages into small blocks for AI: Google says there is no such requirement.[2]
How was it graded?
- Evidence
- C. Limited evidencePlatform rules settle the prerequisites, and one founder case shows AI search becoming a top channel, but it credits mentions on other sites. The on-page tactics show no effect for schema and an inconclusive one for structure in the studies found.
- Verdict
- SituationalDo the technical checks once, they are cheap. Rewriting pages for AI is low priority early: citations follow rankings and mentions on other sites more than page format.

Creating content that people find unique, compelling, and useful will likely influence your website's presence in generative AI search in the long run more than any of the other suggestions in this guide.
While it might be tempting to create separate content for every possible variation of how people might search (for example, by focusing on other queries that people have asked, or fan-out queries), doing so primarily to manipulate rankings or generative AI responses in Google Search violates Google's scaled content abuse spam policy .
"Chunking" content: There's no requirement to break your content into tiny pieces for AI to better understand it.
