About this policy
This Cookie Policy explains how Awiser uses cookies and similar technologies on awiser.co and its sub-domains (the "Service"). It is part of the Privacy Policy and uses the same defined terms.
"Cookies" means small text files placed on your device by websites you visit. Similar technologies — including localStorage, sessionStorage, IndexedDB, pixel tags, and browser fingerprinting techniques — are covered by this policy under the same name, even though they are not strictly "cookies" in the technical sense.
This policy tells you what categories of cookies Awiser uses, why, how long they last, and how you can control them.
1. Who sets cookies on Awiser
Two parties can set cookies when you visit Awiser:
- Awiser — cookies set directly by Awiser's own domain. Called "first-party cookies".
- Third parties — cookies set by services Awiser has integrated, such as analytics providers or session-replay tools. Called "third-party cookies".
Awiser is responsible for deciding whether a third-party cookie is loaded at all. Once the cookie is loaded, the third party is the one reading from it, and that third party's own privacy policy applies to what they do with the data. Their policies are linked in §6. Third parties Awiser uses.
2. Categories of cookies Awiser uses
Awiser groups cookies into four categories, following the categorisation used by most EEA guidance and by the French CNIL:
2.1. Strictly necessary
Required for the Service to work. Without these, you cannot log in, the form-submission cannot be protected against cross-site request forgery, and the language or layout you chose cannot be preserved across pages.
You cannot turn these off. They do not require your consent under Article 5(3) of the ePrivacy Directive because they are strictly necessary to provide the service you asked for.
2.2. Functional
Remember preferences that improve the experience but are not strictly required: display language, interface layout, last-viewed tab. These are set only after you interact with the relevant setting.
2.3. Analytics
Help Awiser understand how the Service is used in aggregate: which pages are popular, how long visitors stay, where errors happen. Awiser uses these to improve the product, not to identify individuals.
Analytics cookies require your consent in the EEA, the UK, Switzerland, and Korea. They are not loaded until you accept them through the consent banner.
2.4. Session replay
Record masked interactions with pages (clicks, scrolls, form-field focus — never the content you type into password or email fields) so Awiser can reproduce and diagnose usability issues. Useful for fixing bugs that affect a small fraction of users.
Session-replay cookies require your consent. They are not loaded until you accept them.
2.5. Advertising
Awiser does not currently use advertising cookies. If that changes — for example, if Awiser later integrates Google AdSense — this policy will be updated, the consent banner will add an "Advertising" category, and advertising cookies will not load unless and until you accept them.
3. The specific cookies Awiser uses
The table below lists the specific cookies in use at the effective date of this policy. Names and durations may change slightly as Awiser updates its infrastructure; if there is a material change, this policy is updated.
3.1. Strictly necessary
| Name | Set by | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
access_token (HTTP-only cookie) | Awiser | Authenticates your logged-in session | Session (rotated on refresh) |
refresh_token (HTTP-only cookie) | Awiser | Allows the access token to be rotated without logging you out | 14 days from issue |
XSRF-TOKEN | Awiser | Protects state-changing requests against cross-site request forgery | Session |
cookie_consent | Awiser | Records your cookie-banner choices so the banner does not keep re-appearing | 6 months |
3.2. Functional
| Name | Set by | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
layout_prefs | Awiser | Remembers the last-viewed tab, card density, and similar UI preferences | 12 months |
3.3. Analytics (consent-gated)
| Name | Set by | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
_ga | Google Analytics 4 (via Google Tag Manager) | Aggregate usage analytics | Up to 24 months |
_ga_<container> | Google Analytics 4 | Session-state for analytics | Up to 24 months |
3.4. Session replay (consent-gated)
| Name | Set by | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
_hjSessionUser_* | Hotjar | Identifies a unique session-replay visitor | 12 months |
_hjSession_* | Hotjar | Groups interactions into a single session | 30 minutes |
_hjIncludedInSessionSample_* | Hotjar | Records whether your session is included in the sample | 2 minutes |
If any of these third-party services are replaced in the future, the replacement will appear here on the next update of this policy.
4. How Awiser asks for your consent
The first time you visit Awiser from a region where consent is required (the EEA, the UK, Switzerland, and Korea), a consent banner appears. It lets you:
- Accept all non-strictly-necessary cookies
- Reject all non-strictly-necessary cookies
- Customise your choices by category (functional, analytics, session replay)
"Reject all" is as easy as "Accept all" — both are presented as equally prominent buttons on the first layer of the banner. Awiser does not treat continued browsing, scrolling, or clicking elsewhere on the page as consent.
Awiser does not load any non-strictly-necessary cookie before you make a choice. If you close the banner without choosing, no consent is recorded and no non-strictly-necessary cookie is loaded.
5. How to change your mind
You can change your cookie choices at any time:
- Click the "Cookie settings" link in the footer of any page on Awiser.
- Reopen the banner from the account settings page.
- Delete the
cookie_consentcookie from your browser — the banner will reappear on your next visit.
You can also control cookies directly through your browser:
- Chrome:
Settings → Privacy and security → Cookies and other site data - Firefox:
Settings → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data - Safari:
Settings → Privacy - Edge:
Settings → Cookies and site permissions
Blocking all cookies — including strictly-necessary ones — will prevent you from logging in and will break other core parts of the Service.
Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control (GPC). Awiser respects a valid GPC signal as a request to reject non-strictly-necessary cookies, consistent with California CPRA guidance. Awiser does not respond to legacy "Do Not Track" browser signals because there is no industry consensus on what that header means.
6. Third parties Awiser uses
Awiser currently loads cookies from the following third parties (consent-gated where indicated in §3). Each of these parties is covered by Awiser's Privacy Policy and by their own policies, linked below.
- Google LLC — Google Analytics 4, Google Tag Manager. Privacy Policy. Data processed under SCCs and the EU-US Data Privacy Framework (where applicable).
- Hotjar Ltd. — Session replay. Privacy Policy. Data processed under SCCs.
Awiser does not sell or share your cookie data with data brokers. See §14 of the Privacy Policy for Awiser's full position on selling or sharing personal information.
7. Cookies and children
Awiser is not intended for children under 16. No cookie on Awiser is used for behavioural advertising to children. If Awiser learns that it has collected data from a child under 16 without a valid lawful basis, Awiser will delete it and terminate the account.
8. Cookies and international transfers
Some third-party cookies result in personal data being transferred out of your country. For example, Google Analytics data is processed on Google's infrastructure, which spans the United States and other jurisdictions.
The legal basis for each such transfer is explained in §11 of the Privacy Policy.
9. Changes to this policy
Awiser may update this Cookie Policy when it changes the cookies it uses, adds or removes a third party, or adjusts its consent mechanism. The effective date at the top of this policy always reflects the most recent version.
Material changes — such as adding a new category of cookies (for example advertising cookies if AdSense is later enabled) — will be communicated through the consent banner, giving you a fresh chance to accept or reject.
